As part of National Careers Week 2016, I was invited to talk with Anne Diamond on BBC Radio Berkshire today about the minefield of job search, how and where to get career advice and support, and who can benefit from careers coaching.

Anne, herself, has just recently experienced the ordeal of helping a child get into work - an experience many of us are familiar with. So she already has significant insight into the frustrations and black holes that recruitment processes can create. HR professionals and recruiters should listen to Anne on this. It's a massive problem and one that my clients consistently come up against. We need to bring the personal touch back into recruitment.

We agreed that job search is a job in itself and should be tackled as such. Surrounding yourself with positive people - essentially cheerleaders - is vital. I also advocated the importance of continual learning and up-skilling - especially where technology is concerned.

I took the opportunity to promote the benefits of LinkedIn and the importance of tailoring job applications to closely match each and every role you apply for... fewer applications... higher quality. I explained how applicant tracking systems or APS work, and the importance of reading job descriptions and matching key words.

Despite my initial apprehension, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was certainly a novel way to spend a Monday morning - for me, at least.
